The inGenious code

Collaboration between school and industry is becoming more and more common in Europe. Specifically in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, it is particularly crucial to help students get a “real life” perspective of how STEM is applied in research, industry and business.

The inGenious code attempts to address the issues that anyone involved in such collaboration may face, in order to overcome many of the barriers to a mutually beneficial relationship. It provides a set of principles, guidelines and checklists that should allow anyone involved in setting up school-industry collaboration to do so as safely, smoothly and securely as possible.

The Experts


Jean-Noël Colin is professor at the Computer Science Faculty of the University of Namur. He is working in the field of information systems security and also has a strong interest in privacy issues. His research work includes protecting data privacy through appropriate privacy-aware access control models and technologies. He is involved in many projects related to the world of education, bringing his technical expertise and helping to adopt a necessary multi-disciplinary approach.



John Stringer is one of the co-authors of the Code. John is a UK barrister and is currently the EUN Data Protection Officer as well as being the Internal Auditor of the organization. He has extensive experience of compliance work both in the public and private sectors and for more than 10 years was the Internal Auditor for the EU Agency that implemented the Socrates Programme (predecessor of the LLP programme). He also has extensive industrial experience and was the European Legal Counsel for a major US apparel company (“Wrangler Jeans”). John also advises EUN on ethical issues and also serves on the EU Commission’s ethics review panel for its Research and Development programmes.

Charmaine Kerr is the Project Coordinator for the European Coordinating Body in Math Science and Technology at European Schoolnet. She is responsible for the activities related to and coordination of the project with relevant stakeholders. Prior to joining European Schoolnet, she worked for two and a half years as a Project Assistant Manager and Scientific Assistant in the area of technical assistance and international cooperation on EU funded projects and grants at the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, Lisbon, Portugal. Before joining the European Agency, Charmaine held the position of Training and Quality Manager and worked for five years within the Foundation for Social Welfare Services as Research Executive in the area of scientific social research and as a Child Protection Coordinator, managing a team of Psychology Officers. Charmaine holds a Masters Degree with distinction in Forensic Psychology and Law from the University of Portsmouth, UK and a Bachelors degree in Psychology with Honors from the University of Malta. She is also a qualified Gestalt Psychotherapist.
