Topic 1 Topic 1

Common experiences and good advices for all types of school-company collaboration

Independent of the type of collaboration there are some general experiences and key advices to bear in mind when establishing and performing collaborations.

  1. How do we make a fruitful contact and relation to a company?
  2. Which factors are crucial to make collaboration a success for pupils, for teachers, for companies?
  3. How do we align our expectations?
  4. How do we assure the level right and the topics relevant?
  5. What are the challenges for the companies and the teachers?
  6. Which is your most important personal general experience ?

Matching expectations?
23/05/12 08:49
To my experience the process of matching expectations is one of the most crucial elements to secure success. The expectations in thought are:

  • The more obvious about "when, where, what, whom"
  • The less obvious about necessary preparations of the pupils, should the pupils produce data, prototypes, samples or something else for further work in the class after the visit, when will the partners meet for evaluation?

What do you think? How do we match the expectations best and what else should be touched upon?

In my school, on upper secondary school there is a long experience on doing classes at industry sites. This classes involve the next few steps:
- Meeting with all teachers participating the class to match wath preparation should be made with the pupils: Concepts, security, research;
- Elaboration of a field road notebook for the students, use to follow the explanations and to take notes. For this we often ask for the industry collaboration for providing data, information, pictures and schemes;
- The class on site is a all day long visit and workshop day, with on class time, field and visit time to the site of the industry;
- After the visit, pupils have to do a report on the class, as a report of the class, a scientific poster about the industry process, etc.

Examples of industry sites where we have done this kind of classes:

- Ammoniac factory, before 2009 (this factory has been shut down at the end of 2009);
- Bear producing plant;
- Glass bottles producing industry;
- Fertilizer producing plant;
- Petrochemical plant;
- Live Science centre on astronomy;
- Air force base;
- Naval base;
- Electricity producing dam;
- Gas and coal Thermoelectric producing plant.

This classes have been a success on raising interest and motivation for STEM but since transport cost are very high, we can only organize one or two of this classes a year.

Thank you for replying to the post.

It is very nice to learn from your experiences. I especially find it interesting that you make a field road with the company - does it take long time? Do all the companies you mention readily accept your visit or did you have to persuade them? Where are you situated? It could be nice to learn even more from how you do these cooperations, are they documented/further described somewhere?

All the best,
Astrid
