Technology Vs Traditional

Let's think about:

What is changing in the classrooms of today compared to the past?
How can we best make use of the new technology to improve traditional teaching methods?

Apps/eBooks/Games VS Blackboards/Books/Homeworks

What are useful apps for teaching/learning/digital resources...?

Hi to you all,
Almost all my students have smartphones. Although phones aren't allowed in classroom' in science we can make them usefull. For example when we are studing in aclass room without computers i let the students use their smartphones. In chemistry they can use the periodic table app. In biology they can work in special educational sights for students.

Hi Irma!
I agree with you. Why try to ignore the good in smartphones? It´s better to learn the students to use good educational apps in STEM and let the students explore where to find them.
I teach only math this year and I let my students use therere smartphones for calculater and different math apps (which is for free).
Do you know any apps for math (the age of the students is 13 years old).

Hi Katarina,
I dont know about apps in math except the calculator but a friend of mine who's a math teacher records his math lessons and uploads them to web sight. In science lessons i also let the students take pictures or videos with their smartphones during experiments. In this way they can recall the experiment before a test. I think this strategy can also be used in math or geometry.

Hi Katarina! How are you?

I can suggest some useful apps for iPhone/iPod... and iPad, that you can find in the Apple Store
- the one I prefer is Dimensions with 14 3D tools
- Meterbox ILDM (Laser Distance Meter)
- MyMeasure (measure lenght, perimeter and area on a map)
- Ruler 2nd (measure lenght...)

You can find similar apps also for android devices like:
- Smart Tools
- Smart Measure
- Smart Distance

Let me know if you can find them useful

Although phones aren't always allowed, I often have a QR code to let the students scan when they enter and they can start background information for the topic. I also allow videos and photos of practicals and as evidence for coursework (as long as student faces aren't in them).

Hi Rachel,
I allow my students to take videos and pictures of the practices and labs that we do during science lessons. It's an educational way to use all the benefits of smartphones.

Is there anyone who ask students using smartphones for orienteering purposes, such as reading maps, tagging their position on the Earth, using Google Maps, Google Earth or similar apps?

When I went to Austria for inGenious, I tagged my position on my iPod so my students could see where I was!! Does this count?!

Hi Rachel,
If i was your student i would probably be curious to know where's my teacher hanging out during the weekends.

Now seriously, I think it's a great idea to share with our students the fact that their teacher is studing and getting updated.

Dear Carlos,
I don't think that we should tag ourselves each time we change location. In this special occasion we were on an academy that will have influence on our teaching methods.I think we could have a disscussion in our class about the academy and its purposes and ask the students about their point of view. When i came back from the academy in Bad Hoffgastein i showed them the place on google earth and told them about the new things i learnd and about the other teachers that i met. The students were very curious and enthusiastic about my experiences.

Best regards,
Irma

Maybe sometimes it appears strange if we do the same things our students do (like geotagging our position).
But I agree with Irma and Rachael... it is very important getting students involved!
They can understand that we are trying to use their way of communicate, we are updating and, most important... they can feel that each time we share something of our work with them, we take care of them!

Hi,

I saw a lecture recently in which smartphones use at class was discussed and they mentioned there a brief example of an application named Math4Mobile for class use.
As a math teacher I am interested to know if anyone has heard or used this application?

Thanks,
Eli

Hi Eli,
I read a lecture, too, and I saw a video, related to the use of Math4Mobile in an interactive mode inside the classroom.

Unfortunately, I saw that the application works only in some kind of devices, those which integrate Java...
This is a limitation, because not all mobiles are compatible :-(

Hi Irma emoticon)

In addition to your post, I want to add that we can use smartphones in class to show experiments which aren't allowed in class. For example, as a teacher, I can't do experiments with a use of Brome, so if I want to show these experiments for my students, I send them links to youtube films and they see the experiments in class through their smartphones.

Regards,

Stella

Hi Irma and everyone,
Since I work at an elementary school, the ability to use the smartphone as a tool for learning is very limited. Due to the uncontrolled use the phone in the study decided not to allow students to use the phone with it you can find alternatives like iPad PC Camera etc. ..

there are many ways to use smartphones in class. my chosen path is augmented reality. i'm getting cool results with 3d models created by the students using a combination of pc-based simple 3d modelling software and es explorer + augment on android tablets and phones. i've been documenting the process here: arbabel X3D AR in classroom the next step is figuring out apps such as hoppala (integrates with layar, wikitude, junaio), 3d layers in layar or aurasma to create specific AR applications. just imagine: give the students a paper with data about, for example, cells, and a marker wich with an AR app on the phone displays an interactive 3d model of the subject...

This technology using iPhone / iPod to school where I teach is quite expensive.
I do not have the iPhone is quite expensive I can not afford one or have my students.
But about what students know all iPhone theoretical about them, what they do, what components are, where to find, but buy one to use in class also takes time.

Me and almoust all of my students own smartphones, but they are different from each other. I do not know particularly a lot of apps. Unfortunately, we often have problems with Wi-Fi. I would like to know how to use smartphones apps. Does anyone have any good links for how I could use these apps?

My students often use smartphones at lab classes.

They record movies with movements of objects and then they analise them with Tracker freeware.

It is a very simple and sheap way to replace a movement sensor.

With the GPS APP they record some paths and then they analyse it in a freeware, and with Google Earth.

We are starting campaign in the middle of january throw QR-code to play special process technology game.Students are playing and after recommending for other friends throw facebook. They can win some awards, if they are getting many friends with them. This is channel how to get new students for the school next autumn.
