Technology Vs Traditional

Let's think about:

What is changing in the classrooms of today compared to the past?
How can we best make use of the new technology to improve traditional teaching methods?

Apps/eBooks/Games VS Blackboards/Books/Homeworks

What are useful apps for teaching/learning/digital resources...?

Hi to you all,
Almost all my students have smartphones. Although phones aren't allowed in classroom' in science we can make them usefull. For example when we are studing in aclass room without computers i let the students use their smartphones. In chemistry they can use the periodic table app. In biology they can work in special educational sights for students.

Hi Irma!
I agree with you. Why try to ignore the good in smartphones? It´s better to learn the students to use good educational apps in STEM and let the students explore where to find them.
I teach only math this year and I let my students use therere smartphones for calculater and different math apps (which is for free).
Do you know any apps for math (the age of the students is 13 years old).

Hi Katarina,
I dont know about apps in math except the calculator but a friend of mine who's a math teacher records his math lessons and uploads them to web sight. In science lessons i also let the students take pictures or videos with their smartphones during experiments. In this way they can recall the experiment before a test. I think this strategy can also be used in math or geometry.

Hi Katarina! How are you?

I can suggest some useful apps for iPhone/iPod... and iPad, that you can find in the Apple Store
- the one I prefer is Dimensions with 14 3D tools
- Meterbox ILDM (Laser Distance Meter)
- MyMeasure (measure lenght, perimeter and area on a map)
- Ruler 2nd (measure lenght...)

You can find similar apps also for android devices like:
- Smart Tools
- Smart Measure
- Smart Distance

Let me know if you can find them useful

Although phones aren't always allowed, I often have a QR code to let the students scan when they enter and they can start background information for the topic. I also allow videos and photos of practicals and as evidence for coursework (as long as student faces aren't in them).

Hi Rachel,
I allow my students to take videos and pictures of the practices and labs that we do during science lessons. It's an educational way to use all the benefits of smartphones.

Is there anyone who ask students using smartphones for orienteering purposes, such as reading maps, tagging their position on the Earth, using Google Maps, Google Earth or similar apps?

When I went to Austria for inGenious, I tagged my position on my iPod so my students could see where I was!! Does this count?!

Hi Rachel,
If i was your student i would probably be curious to know where's my teacher hanging out during the weekends.

Now seriously, I think it's a great idea to share with our students the fact that their teacher is studing and getting updated.
