Different national curricula

We are here to talk about the differences in curricula between European countries. What are the main contents/topics/concepts you must teach in your country because of your national curriculum?

Hello!
I teach chemistry in grades 8 and 9. In Estonia we start with substances and their properties. Then chemical elements, the periodical table and more about oxygen, hydrogen and some important metals. Quite long time is spent on learning more about oxides, acids, bases and salts. We learn how to write formulas and also some simple equations.

In class 9 we teach about solutions. An important topic is carbon, carbon compounds and their role in the nature. There are some more topics.

I would really like to know about other countries!

Hi, chemistry teachers, where are you?

Hello
I am chemistry teacher in Slovakia. Most my chemistry lessons are for a bit older students, so we cannot compare curricula. But I have several lessons for pupils in comparable age. Pupils starts with properties of different substances, gases, liquids and solids. Excercises in laboratory includes some separation methods - filtration and crystalization,in this section. Next lessons are mostly about water and air and their polution. Except these topics older pupils learn a lot about fire and fire estinguisher. Next year pupils started with atoms, elements and compounds, periodic table, chemical bonding, nomenclature and simple compounds in common life, construction and environmnent. Quite a lot to do.

Hi Aiki,
In Israel. in secondary school, chemistry is a part of science lessons, where we teach also physics and biology.
It's very interesting that the topics which we teach in 8-9 grades are similar to what you teach in Estonia. There is an example that curriculum in different countries look alike emoticon))

Stella

Hi all,

I agree with Stella. In Israel the topics that we teach in Chemistry are quiet similar to those discribed by Aiki from Astonia. In recent years the Israeli curriculum is adjusted to the one in Europian countries because of the TIMSS & PISA exames.
In order to do well in those exames the Israeli MED has adjusted the curriculum to the Curriculum in developed Europian countries.

Chemistry now takes a significant portion in the secondary science curriculum. The topics studied in chemistry are very relevant to the topics studied in biology. For example we teach in 9th grade about the carbon compounds and later we refer to them when we teach about the organic compounds in organisms.

Best Regards,
Irma

Thank you, Ludmila, Stella and Irma for sharing. That's true that here in Europe we are trying to learn from each other and curriculums become more similar. The basic knowledge in chemistry is still the same and we have to start from it.

Chemistry can be well integrated with physics and biology. Do you think we should do it more?

Do you feel your students like chemistry or they consider it too difficult? What makes chemistry exciting for students?

Hello from Finland

I teach chemistry in secondary school. Our chemistry curriculum looks like this:

7grade: learn how we work safely in laboratory, compounds, atoms and elements, chemiacal reactions, mixtures and pure substances

8 grade: oxygen, bases, acids, periodic table and bonds

9 grade: organic chemistry (carbons chemistry) and its applications (textiles, plastics, papers, drucks, detergents), metal chemistry.

This is our policy definitions. Some differences are between the schools is due to what textbook they use at school. Organic chemistry is in 8 grade or 9 grade.

Učitelj sam kemije u 7. i 8. razredu Osnovne škole. Potom izučavamo zrak i vodu i polako dolazimo do najtežeg submikroskopske razine u kojoj se bavimo pojmovima poput atoma, iona, molekule, formulske jedinke, valencija, relativne atomske i molekulske mase. Ovim dijelom pripremamo učenike za savladavanje kemijskih jednadžbi. Također se bavimo brzinom kemijske reakcije i energetskim promjenama pri fizikalnim i kemijskim reakcijama.
8. razred počinjemo s nemetalima i njihovim kiselinama, metalima i lužinama i solima.

I agree with you, Sanda. Understanding molecular and atomic level is not easy. It's too abstract, we can't touch itemoticon I like it that you start with more practical topics and then gradually come to atoms and molecules.

Hello Aiki,
In Lithuania we have curriculum similar to Estonian, in the 8th form we teach basic qualities of substances and the periodic table, and the aim is just to make students acquainted with chemistry basics. In the 9th form we study solutions, acids, bases, salts, oxides, in more detail. 11th and 12th forms students can choose subjects and few of them choose chemistry for two main reasons -- many students think chemistry is difficult to study and as soon as many high schools do not require chemistry exam for entrance, students decide not to study it. I think that to make chemistry more attractive it makes sense to integrate chemistry with other subjects such as physics, biology, even geography.

In grades 9-10 is inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry in grades 11-12, is one hour per week and is subject to examination at the end of grade 12.
