Summary of the week Summary of the week

If you are going to approach a company where you want to work together with, an advise would be to write down your ambitions as a school and make a plan. Here are a few highlights from this week:
•    Where is the company specialized in and how does that fit in the school’s STEM subjects?
•    Make use of existing contacts with the company or make use of parents who work in the company.
•    If you approach a company, approach it together with the management of the school.
•    In some cases agreements are made by the managements of the school and the company.
•    Make use of the situation on the labour market. If there is a shortage for Science & Technology employers, emphasize the need to interest young children for Science & Technology, so the company can benefit from it in the future.
•    And besides that It is a long term investment for the company, but it is crucial for the future and the welfare of your country!

Knocking on the door of a company…

If you need a product, you go to a store and buy it. If you want to know a bit more about a certain product, you ask the seller or you search in the internet. But if you are a teacher and you would like to work together with a technology company, who do you address?

Schools and companies are two different organizations with their own core business: education and selling a product or service to make money.  What if you are a teacher and you would like to visit a chemical company with your class, because it suits so nicely in your chemistry lesson?  Just knock on the door, send an email or pick up the phone?

This week’s topic is all about giving you some ideas and suggestions of how to approach a company successfully. A few questions that play an important role are for example:

1.    What is the size of the company?
2.    What is the most suitable department of the company?
3.    What is you want of the company (your game plan)?
4.    What’s in it for the company?

If there are any more questions you would like to be answered please feel free to post them. And if you have any experience (positive or negative) in approaching a company, sharing it with us is highly appreciated.
