Summary of the week Summary of the week

Thanks you to everyone who contributed to Week 3, giving examples of how you use new technology in your school, and the problems you encounter when trying to do this

First, here is how you are using new technology in your schools:

  1. I ask pupils to take some photos (with their mobile phones) related to the topic studied. For example: "Take one picture which describes a friction the best." Then pupils can show their pics to the whole class using projector. You can also ask them to tell a short story related to their pic. Pupils love to tell and listen stories
  2. I use Twitter, Facebook, cloud computing and game-based learning.
  3. Children are very keen on practising maths for The World Maths Day and this year we also started with World Spelling Day.
  4. Soon Reading Eggs is coming which is trying to make pupils read more with the help of games.
  5. We invited a Robot Theatre to our school and the students could use these Legos they were very enthusiastic.
  6. Students also like mobile internet and we have used Key To Nature identification tools in biology classes.

And here are some of the problems you said you have had:

  1. Children like playing games in their free time, so why are digital games not used more in schools?
  2. Great interest in free software, but insufficient financing for hardware, so we have some laptops for teachers, but not for students.
  3. Our book-publishers are making quite nice materials, but they are not free.
  4. Every student having laptop is wishful thinking...iPads and e-books also.
  5. Financing is a major issue. 500 euros for 3D printing kit seems impossible. I have to be content with a computer in every classroom - most school don't have even that.
  6. In our school we have one computer-class with 16 computers where all teachers can teach their lessons. But the problem is - we can't to do this on the same time.
  7. Most of our students don't have the possibility to use computer and internet even at home.

We will ask the questions:

How practical are these cutting edge technologies?

How can you see them being used in your school?

What technology would you like to see in your school, to make your job easier, more exciting, etc?
