Summary of the week Summary of the week

Thanks for all your contributions this week. Here's a summary:

How you are using social media in school:

  1. Virtual class in Facebook for my project "Where music lives".
  2. My students have used blogs (blogger.com)
  3. Students have created google sites.
  4. PBWorks for teacher training
  5. Netvibes as my E-portfolio
  6. Can support communication with my colleagues and students from Asia and Europe thanks social network.
  7. After taking in all this new information and examples of using social software, I'm afraid that I'll spend most of my summer vacation preparing something new and exciting for next school year
  8. Pupils use social network between eachother a lot, such as messenger, twitter, moviestarplanet, runescape, skype, Habbo, Prohotel.
  9. We have own facebook-pages in the vocational educational and training school in the chemistry department. We add videos from laboratory works, stories about old students, careers and presentation of our studies. Students are joined to discussions in certain topics.
  10. We are using social network communications for parents. They can follow their children grades at present time.
  11. Through the social net you can also review what the students are writing and evaluate if the project is going well or not.
  12. For my work with my class I use Edmodo. I recommend it. It allows the interaction on-line teacher-students. They can upload their works, express their ideas and it's free and Private. You can control who access and who speak. (With teenagers this is important)
  13. My school has just enter in Facebook and Twitter. We think this is the best way to reach our students, old students, parents, and friends... If you have news or information to offer to the community, maybe websites are old-fashioned. Now people don't surf looking your school website, they prefer to surf on Facebook and Twitter and the information they need reach them.

Questions and issues you had about social media in school:
  1. Q: Did you feel that it was successful just because young people are attracted to the concept of social media? Or were there ways in which social media actually facilitated learning?
A: Students could present their creativity. Thanks to works of students, we have learned a lot about culture of other countries. It was not only learning, but it was intercultural exchange.
  2. Some of my students don't have internet connetction, or they're forbidden to use it by their parents. So in such a way of comunication they would be excluded, and I wouldn't like to make such a difference between children.
  3. How to use Facebook correctly (Privacy wise)?
  4. As a math teacher, what will be the added value of FB versus the Moodle platform which I use today? can it supplement it? How?
  5. The problem (or not) with Edmodo is that this platform doesn't allow the iteraction among students. Then, you lost one of the main ideas of social nets: Creating knowledge from the iteraction among people.
  6. If we give all the information via internet, our parents won't have the need to come to school, talk to us, etc.
